What the map shows
- Alabama has the most HBCUs: 14, including Tuskegee University, Alabama State and Alabama A&M. Georgia and North Carolina have 10 each.
- Half are private. 50 are private four-year colleges, 42 are public four-year universities, and 10 are two-year colleges.
- Almost all are in the South and the Mid-Atlantic. The exceptions are two in Ohio, two in Missouri and one in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- There are two Lincoln Universities: one in Jefferson City, Missouri, and one in Pennsylvania.

How this map was made
The list, each school's address and its location come from the U.S. Department of Education's college directory (IPEDS, 2024-25), which flags every institution designated as an HBCU. We checked the list against Wikipedia's list of HBCUs; 101 of the 102 appear there by name, and the other, Southern University Law Center, is part of the Southern University System. The directory counts a few campuses separately, which is why it lists slightly more than the "about 100" HBCUs often quoted.
