This map shows 765 lighthouses in the United States: every US lighthouse with its own Wikipedia article. Zoom into any coast, search for a lighthouse or a town, or open Filters to pick a state or a range of years. Each lighthouse links to its full history.
What the map shows
- Michigan has the most, by a wide margin: 104. Its Great Lakes shoreline is dotted with harbor, pier and reef lights, and Wisconsin (47) and New York (76, many on Lakes Erie and Ontario) add many more.
- New England is lighthouse country: Maine (66), Massachusetts (64), Rhode Island (26) and Connecticut (23) have 179 between them.
- Boston Light is the oldest station, first lit in 1716. Tybee Island (1736), Beavertail (1749) and New London Harbor (1760) follow.
- Lighthouses aren't only on the ocean: there are lighthouses on Lake Champlain in Vermont, on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, and even on Lake Minatare in western Nebraska.
- Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have their own historic lights, including El Morro in San Juan.

How this map was made
The lighthouses come from Wikidata, the structured database behind Wikipedia: every lighthouse in the United States that has its own English Wikipedia article and isn't recorded as destroyed or demolished. Positions are the ones in those articles; we checked a sample of well-known lights (Portland Head, Cape Hatteras, Montauk Point and others) against their known locations. The year first lit is shown where it's recorded, for about four in five lighthouses. Some are active aids to navigation, others are museums or private homes, so check before you visit.
